How to Create a Salon Refill Product Program
How to Create a Salon Refill Product Program
Now more than ever, consumers are becoming more aware of the environmental impact of the goods they are buying. Today’s savvy clients are leaning towards businesses who are making valid efforts in cutting their environmental impact. And as holistic hair stylists, we are in the best position to turn their awareness into action.
Research shows that compared with other recyclable materials, plastic takes the longest to decompose. Thus, experts are predicting that in 2050, plastic packaging will outnumber marine life if we don’t make changes to our plastic consumption soon.
Our solution: A Salon Refill Product Program. Implementing this Program will not only benefit your business sales-wise but, more importantly, it also allows you to become a more sustainable, eco-friendly salon.
Grab our ultra useful Salon Refill Product Program Tips!
Create an eye-catching product refill station.
Your display area is often the first and last thing your clients see when they enter and exit your salon, so it is important to create an eye-catching display area for your Refill Station. This helps generate enough curiosity and interest to get your clients to check out how it works and jump on your newest initiative.
You can either make your own shelves or purchase from thrift stores and craft stores, then neatly arrange the products.
Limited on space? Not a problem! You can use your back bar area as your Refill Station area by simply stocking up on your best-selling products that come in professional sizes, like Hair Baths and Conditioners.
Create an attention grabbing Refill Station Sign.
A Refill Station Sign or shelf talkers are integral to the success of your Refill Station, so make sure they stand out. Place a “Refill Station” sign above the products so clients immediately know what the shelf is for. You can also add business cards and product labels that your clients can read while waiting to be serviced, but be sure to keep the message short and simple. Many salons use Green as font color for their shelf talkers as it’s often associated with being Eco-Friendly.
Make it interactive.
Allow your clients to experience refilling their own salon containers, or watch their stylist do so. This makes them an active participant in solving environmental problems, thus keeping them involved and invested in your initiative.
The Program is also a great opportunity to introduce other Oway and O&M products and their benefits to your clients. Let them smell and test the products and you’ll be surprised how this practice can boost your salon retail sales.
Explain your eco-initiative.
Highlighting the benefits of the Refill Station to your clients and how they’re helping the environment by participating is a sure-fire way to get them on board. Below are some of the Program’s benefits to your clients and the environment:
Benefits For Your Clients
- Decrease Product Cost by 15%
- Feel Good About Being More Eco-Friendly
- Have Fun Interacting with Refill Station Display
Benefits For the Environment
- Decrease Carbon Emissions
- Decrease Consumption of Finite Resources
- Increase Natural Purity of Animal Habitats
The production, transportation, and consumption of a single plastic container produces an estimated carbon footprint equal to 82.8 grams (about 3 ounces) of carbon dioxide. Multiply that to the billions of tons of plastic waste in our landfills and we got astronomically high quantities of greenhouse gases crowding the Earth’s atmosphere, resulting in global warming.
Encouraging clients to participate in your Refill Program allows them to cut their plastic consumption and reduce their carbon footprint in the process.
Reward your clients.
Offering rewards is a proven way to entice clients into participating in your Refill Program. Put up signs like: “Bring me back to be refilled and receive 15% OFF” and you won’t even have to convince them.
Start your own Refill Station with these kits!

Spring Cleaning: How to Spark Joy in the Salon Marie Kondo Style
How to Spring Clean the Salon Marie Kondo Style
Tidying up is not just about decluttering - it's also about leaving room for things that *truly* matter for your inner peace and space. Do the things you have in the salon give you joy? Or are you holding on to things because you should or they've served purpose in the past?
This Spring, give your salon a fresh start. Inspired by Marie Kondo's popular KonMari Method, we’ve put together five hassle-free ideas that will leave your salon clean and sparkling.
Spark joy in the salon with these cleaning and tidying techniques!
Step One: Pre-cleansing ritual.
Marie Kondo suggests starting your cleaning experience with greeting your space and saying thanks for all the wonderful memories and opportunities it has provided you.
Step Two: Purify the air.
Once your pre-cleaning ritual is complete, purify your space of any negative energy by burning sage (aka smudging) or diffusing pure essential oils. This will set a joyful mood and a more positive atmosphere as you tidy up your salon.
You can also use our all-natural Oway Bio-Rich Water to replace your air fresheners. This versatile spray is made from essential oil hydrolates, so it contains properties needed to detoxify and freshen the air.
Step Three: Organize by category.
Many of us love to organize our things according to season or room. Unfortunately, doing this can lead to having similar items scattered in different areas of the salon.
If you have a small suite, you need to make use of your space mindfully, and this is where the KonMari Method comes in.
Marie Kondo's method is all about simplicity. Organizing items by category, such as Tools, Garments, Accessories, etc. will help you save time looking for them and putting them away. For tiny accessories like clips or bobby pins, Oway’s signature amber glass jars are perfect. They're infinitely recyclable and make for cute decor, too.
Step Four: Discard and donate anything that you don't need.
Obvious things like leftover hair color and other unused salon treatments should be properly discarded. Donate old salon tools to businesses or individuals who would find use for them. But before you toss them aside - Marie Kondo suggests thanking each item for serving its purpose.
However, this concept is not only limited to physical items. Sometimes as we transition to a more holistic lifestyle, we have a hard time ditching our old ways. To ensure that your salon is as green as possible, ask yourself: Are the products I'm using contain chemicals that may harm the health of my team and clients? Are the ingredients cruelty-free and ethically sourced? Are my tools, equipment and furniture eco-friendly and made from sustainable materials?
Step Five: Freshen up your linens.
Make sure your linens are folded and stacked neatly and upright, so that they look tidy and are easy to find. Keep them extra fresh with Oway Tratto Fabric & Lingerie Spray, it's the ultimate luxury spray and enlivens the atmosphere with a bubbly and warm citrus blend. You can spritz it on your Oway Regenerated Cotton Collection salon garments as an inviting treat for your team and clients.
An important part of the KonMari Method is to “tidy everything at once”. It’s more rewarding if you are able to complete the project the same day. If you have a large space, get your staff or loved ones to participate in tidying up to encourage teamwork. The idea is to create a space that sparks joy and who better to do it with than the people closest to you?

90’s Hair: Modern Spins on Decade Classics
The 90's have made a major comeback! From butterfly clips to twists, everywhere you turn the 90’s are here and it looks like the trend is sticking around for a while. We've compiled a few hairstyle favorites from the time period that you can replicate in the salon with a more updated and modern spin.
Here are some inspired hair trends from the decade!
The Rachel Wave
Hair by @thehairparlourkc
Jennifer Aniston absolutely rocked the tousled, just-got-out-of-bed look. This popular do’ had tons of shine. Here’s how to create this with a more current feel.
- This look can be updated by implementing a fresh shag cut.
- Using a straight razor, carve texture and layers into the natural wave.
- Use a concoction of Oway Curly Potion and Oway Smoothing Cream to run through hair.
- Diffuse dry.
The Julia Curls
Hair by @_thehalfrican
Julia Roberts had the ideal head of curls in the 90’s. Natural curls were a hit then and, luckily, resurfaced in recent years. Here's how to recreate and modernize the style.
- This look is mainly about the haircut. Follow the shape of the head with layering to build volume and shape.
- Cleanse the hair and rinse thoroughly. Add a lot of water while raking through sections of hair.
- Use a scrunching method with Oway Curly Hair Potion while the hair is flipped upside down.
- Rake through Oway Smoothing Cream.
- Depending on the density of the hair adjust amount of cream to use. Section hair down the middle about a quarter for each side.
- Diffuse dry.
The Courtney Cut
Hair by @lexismithhair
Bobs have always been timeless and a staple in the 90’s. Courtney Cox rocks this style with frontal highlights. For a modern approach;
- Use lots of blunt lines texturizing and slide cutting technique.
- Glaze with O&M CØR.color 7.0 Blonde to achieve color.
- Finish this sleek look with O&M Frizzy Logic Shine Serum.
The Space Buns
Hair by @headrushsalonct
Gwen Stefani always had vibrant hair color and styled it with the ever popular-double space buns. Here’s how to refresh this decade favorite.
- For this fun 90’s look, Use Oway Thermal Stress Protector before curling with a 1” wand. Let the hair cool before running fingers through.
- Spritz hair with Oway Sculpting Mist.
- Put some Oway Water Resin on fingertips to do the dutch braids in the mohawk section. Pull the braids out a little bit so they are not so tight to the head.
- Secure the braid with an elastic and lightly tease the leftover ponytail before twisting it into a knot.
- Use bobby pins to secure it and pull apart some sections of the buns to shape them.
- Finish with Oway Sculpting Mist to set the style in place.
The Casual Cindy
Hair by @mirandak_kolors
Cindy Crawford serves 90's laid back and casual. To translate the "effortless" hair look into a more modern 'do, use natural texture and softer foiling.
- Start with a full babylight with vertical sectioning, focusing around her face and feathering toward her scalp.
- Mix Oway Hbleach Butter Cream Lightener and Oway Hcatalyst 20 Volume Cream Developer in foils making sure to keep continuously checking.
- Rinse and tone with a mixture of O&M CØR.color 6.11 Intense Ash Dark Blonde & O&M CØR.color 5 vol Activator.
The Selena Signature
Hair by @alejandra_abloom
The half up, half down ponytail is the signature hairstyle of the decade. Emanate a Selena Quintanilla vibe with this new twist!
- Take freshly shampooed hair and spray liberally throughout the hair from root and ends. Comb and work through.
- Take Oway Shaping Putty to emulsify in the hair and work throughout the length of the strands.
- Blow-dry 75% with a diffuser.
- Next take Oway Sea Salt Spray and apply to the regrowth and continue to scrunch dry with a diffuser to help set the curl. Dry to 100%.
