Top 151 Keyboard Shortcuts for Busy Entrepreneurs to Save Time

Tired of Working From Home? Why Coworking Is Such a Popular Option for Freelancers

two people on laptops and phones working in a co-working space

Coworking is one of the most tangible, disruptive concepts shaping today’s working environment. Not only has the term become part of our everyday business language but coworking spaces are part of life for millions of people.

The spread of the coworking idea is a reflection of several dynamic trends that are changing the way we work today. Digitalization has disrupted whole professions and industries, making it easier for many people to work away from a traditional office. And always-on availability—a constant stream of data and communication—requires everyone to figure out an optimal balance between their work and their private lives.

One group that has a tough time avoiding this challenge are freelancers, and many have found that coworking spaces offer an effective way to structure their business lives: In its 2017 Global Coworking Survey, Deskmag found that about 4 in 10 coworkers are, in fact, working as freelancers.

One major factor is flexibility

Coworking spaces don’t just accommodate flexible schedules with 24/7 access, they typically offer flexible pricing.

Some coworking spaces allow users to come work for single days, while most offer memberships on a monthly basis. This helps ease financial pressure and helps enable freelancers to respond to short-term fluctuations or private projects if needed.

An office that’s ready to go from Day One

Moving into an office space can come with a number of challenges for a small business. There are the fixed costs of a new office, such as rent and insurance, as well as high initial investments in basic office infrastructure, such as furnishings and technical equipment. Then there’s the time and construction that might be needed to set up shop.

Coworking spaces, by contrast, let you start working productively right away: The infrastructure is already in place and ready to be used on demand, with costs shared by the whole community. This makes coworking not just convenient but also cost-effective.

Apart from the usual office gear (i.e. printers, scanners, copy machines), most spaces provide conference rooms and lounge areas—amenities that wouldn’t make much sense for the average freelancer to maintain. Many coworking spaces also offer basic services, such as mail handling. And some target specific industries or professions and lure them with special features such as high-performance computers, 3D printers, or fully equipped manufacturing workshops.

Close, but not too close

Nearly half of all coworkers worked at home before they joined a coworking community. And coworking spaces often offer a way to get out of a home office without adding a long commute: Deskmag found that coworkers prefer to stay close to home, with most spending 20 minutes or less to get to their coworking space.

Coworking spaces offer community

The social factor is an important factor for many people who join a coworking space. It’s a platform for both private and professional exchanges, where you might meet like-minded people to socialize, transfer knowledge, collaborate and learn with others, or cooperate on a professional level. Working among other freelancers can also help give your productivity a boost!

Is it old fashioned to put so much emphasize on intentionally separating your private and professional lives when you can work from anywhere? Surveys have found that many workers are ditching the 9-to-5 because they want the flexibility to work when and how they want. Coworking can offer a structure and a clear distinction between different aspects of life while you set a schedule that helps you work and live better.

3 Things Freelancers Add to Your Business (That You Might Not Think About)

Feature image: Alex Portera, Freelance Copywriter, in El Transito, Nicaragua.

Alex Portera wanted freedom, creativity, and control over his work life. “After spending 3.5 years in the corporate world, I knew I needed a different environment to thrive.” So, in 2016, he started his own freelance business writing sales copy that helps clients grab a reader’s attention and convert them to customers.

“I love the unlimited possibility of freelancing. The challenges of creating your own business. The excitement of constantly working on new projects. The neverending need to improve,” he said. “I also have a passion project that takes up a significant amount of my time, and I love having the flexibility to work on it when I need to.”

Freelancers, like Portera, are passionate, driven, and have a skill set that extends much farther than their service offering.

1. Freelancers are business owners, too

Portera has found success in freelancing and can attribute that to providing a professional service and treating it as exactly what it is—his own business. “I’m finding clients. I’m delivering work. I’m doing taxes. I’m making my clients money. I’m investing my own profits back into developing my skills. That’s a business if I’ve ever seen one.”

The skills it takes to run a successful freelance business are the same skills it takes to run any successful business. This means freelancers can look at your business through the eyes of someone familiar with how businesses should be run, and can bring that knowledge and passion to your project.

2. Client and freelancer engagements are unique–in a good way

“My favorite thing about working with clients on Upwork is that everything about an engagement is clear upfront. Clients are clear on what they want, freelancers are clear on what they will deliver, and both parties are on the same page about pricing right away. It’s also cool to have immediate access to such a wide pool of awesome clients.”

The relationships built between clients and freelancers are unique and extremely valuable. “My favorite project became much more than just a project. A short two-hour gig, turned into a six-month engagement. The client was a startup that is also based in NYC, and [because of the proximity] I would spend one day a week at their office. I consider my clients friends at this point.”

The most interesting thing he’s ever worked on? “I once wrote a 1-minute video script that explained the entire history of humanity. It was a lot to fit into 60 seconds!”

3. Freelancers know client care is about the big picture

Alex goes above and beyond to ensure his clients have a great experience. “I think one of the things that works well for me is always thinking about my clients business outside of the job I’ve been hired for. I always want to know how what I’m doing fits into the larger picture. In that way, I can help my clients get exactly what they need, which is not always the same as what they ask for. By making suggestions beyond the scope of the project, I help my clients in ways they never expected. This positions me as much more than a copywriter.”

“When you work with a freelancer, you can find the person with the perfect skill set for your needs. You never need to force-fit a skill set. The precision, expertise, and flexibility this provides is unbelievably useful. And if you find the right freelancer, it will feel like they’ve been part of your team since Day One.“
