Transitioning to Freelancing Full-Time? Tips from an Upwork Ambassador
As the Upwork Ambassador for the Austin, TX, area, Scott Poniewaz organizes networking events for the local Upwork community. He also helps freelancers grow their businesses through workshops and trainings.
It isn’t just Poniewaz’s experience as a full-time freelance marketer and startup consultant that makes him such a helpful resource. It’s also the knowledge gained by co-founding and building several innovative companies, which gives him unique insights into the challenges a growing business can face.
“I got started freelancing when a company I had been with for a few years, despite achieving great growth and success, started to get stagnant,” Poniewaz said. “The positive was that it was operating like a well-oiled machine, but the negative was that the excitement had started to fade. At that point, I had already been doing some advising and consulting on the side. As I began to get more and more requests for my expertise, it just started to make sense that I finally take the leap.”
One of the most common questions Poniewaz receives is how he made the transition to freelancing full-time. His advice? Start small. “The misconception that you need to be full-time from the start is one that holds many people back,” he said. “In fact, I recommend that you test the waters with some night or weekend projects first. This gives you the opportunity to build new skills, expand your portfolio, or even explore a new path before going all-in. Then, as you gain clients and a solid workload, you can make the leap to full-time freelancer.”
As a full-time freelancer, he enjoys being able to help other companies grow while simultaneously building his own freelance business.”When running a company, you often have a team and a primary product you are trying to develop a company around,” he said. “As a freelancer, I am instead helping steer several companies down the right path while gaining far more experience across several clients than I would previously in the silo of my own, single company.”
While freelancing certainly has its benefits, it’s not without its challenges. To help ensure he stays motivated and productive while working virtually with clients across the country, Poniewaz strives to keep consistent work hours.
“I have specific hours that I’ll work. Having a set start time each day ensures I stay on track. I’m also a fan of the bullet journal system,” he added. “Each morning I lay out both the short-term and long-term tasks that need to be completed. It keeps me on-task and I’m less tempted to spend time on social media or working on lower priority tasks.”

How to Keep Business Momentum Going
Have you built up some business momentum in the last few weeks? Maybe you’ve landed a big new client, or you set a new years resolution that you’ve been sticking to diligently. That’s great for you and your business, and you want to keep moving in this direction.
In order to keep the good times rolling, you need to do three things.
Track what’s working
There is a reason that everyone is so obsessed with data today. It helps you find out exactly what’s working for you. The next step is to double down on that.
Is there an email you’ve sent to two clients that has gotten a good response? Have you started posting new pictures on Instagram that are getting more engagement? Those are the things that you can do more of to keep your business momentum going.
Set aside an hour each week to go through your social stats, your best email exchanges, and your most popular blog posts. Note down what works best and incorporate more of that into your work moving forward.
Keep inspiration handy
Inspiration is a powerful feeling. It motivates us in our hearts and minds, and it can drive us to achieve things that we never thought possible.
It’s also a short lived feeling. How many times have you heard an incredible speech and left feeling inspired, and then have it vanish over the course of the next few hours?
Keep things that inspire you near you. A photo of the house you want to live in one day, or a picture from a place you want to visit. I’m personally a big fan of inspiration quotes, which I keep on the cork board above my desk.
Springboard off of your successes
One success should be seen as a gateway to another. Let’s say that you land a big new contract with a large client. You can use that one deal to help land another. Highlight the work you do for that client in your portfolio. Put their logo on your website as a place you’ve been featured. Link to the work you did for them in prospective emails that you send out to other clients.
One large deal can turn into another if you position yourself correctly. You’re looking for the snowball effect: you want one good thing to turn into another.
Keeping business momentum going will do more to further your business and career than anything else. The time is now; seize upon moments of magnitude for your business and multiply them.

How Small Business Insurance Can Protect Your Company from Cybersecurity Risks
According to a recent Insureon-Manta survey, only 18 percent of small business owners think they are at risk for a cyberattack. Why is that a problem? Many studies claim those same businesses are more likely to be a target for cyberattacks than big companies.
Although breaches at large companies often grab headlines, those companies typically have a team of security experts dedicated to protecting data. Small businesses are often easier to breach because few have the resources to protect their systems.
Criminals may try to steal business information from you, but they may also use your IT systems as a stepping stone to other companies. Hackers used a small HVAC vendor to access data from up to 110 million Target customers in 2013.
Business owners should make cybersecurity a priority if they:
- Accept credit cards
- Store or process private information
- Conduct business online or in the cloud
How cyber liability insurance protects your business
No matter what industry you’re in, a data breach can hurt your business. First, there’s the immediate expense, such as alerting clients and hiring a cybersecurity expert to determine the source of the problem. The average data breach costs $3.6 million or $141 per data record, according to a study of more than 400 organization in 11 countries by the Ponemon Institute, sponsored by IBM Security. A breach can also damage your reputation, which may cost you future business.
Data breach recovery costs paid out of pocket can devastate a small business. That’s why many small business owners opt for cyber liability insurance, which helps businesses by covering some expenses, such as:
- Client notification
- Credit monitoring
- Crisis management and public relations
- Ransom
- Legal and forensic accounting services
You can purchase a standalone cyber liability policy. However, some insurers may add cyber liability coverage to a professional liability or business owner’s policy (BOP). Usually, the deciding factor is your industry. Someone who’s responsible for safe data storage, such as an IT professional, may add a cyber endorsement to their professional liability insurance. Business owners in other industries are more likely to add it to their BOP.
In addition to carrying cyber insurance, there are several steps businesses can take to prevent cybersecurity threats.
How to limit cybersecurity risks
When it comes to cybersecurity, businesses can reduce the chances of a breach by practicing good cyber hygiene:
- Use strong passwords. Long, more complex passwords are better than short, simple ones. If you deal with highly sensitive data, consider using a two-step authentication process.
- Keep your systems up to date. Install software updates and patches for your phone and computer as soon as they become available. Often these patches address security vulnerabilities.
- Use a firewall. A firewall prevents malicious software from reaching your network. Some firewalls also scan for viruses.
- Install antimalware and antivirus software. Protect your systems from malicious activity with antimalware and antivirus software. Remember to update this software when prompted.
- Ask your cloud provider about their security. Your provider should be able to answer questions about how they keep your data safe. Find out about their physical security measures and their encryption level.
- Choose a secure payment processor. Anyone who stores, transmits, or processes payment card information needs a processor that is PCI-DSS compliant. The rules can be intimidating, so work with a vendor with experience.
- Get a VPN. A virtual private network (VPN) encrypts your data. This helps provide an added layer of security when you’re on a public network.
- Add a cyber liability clause to your contracts. Work with a lawyer to develop a clause that assigns liability in the event of a data breach.
One final cybersecurity tip: Create an incident response plan that lists whom to contact and where backups are stored. It won’t stop a hacker from rooting through your data, but it can help you respond to a breach quickly and efficiently.

Marketing can be one of the biggest challenges businesses face, and it can be costly. No one wants to spend thousands of dollars on marketing tactics, only to have no positive results to show for it when the campaign ends. However, many people don’t realize the tactics out there that they can experiment with that won’t take a marketing expert or cost an arm and a leg.
Here are five inexpensive marketing tactics that may work for creating awareness, and generating leads for your business.
Partner with other businesses
Partnering with other businesses can be a great way to increase your visibility. Find businesses that match up well with your business, and have the same target audience as you. For example, if you are a juicing business, maybe you’ll partner with a nearby yoga and pilates studio.
You can partner in a variety of different ways. Maybe by placing each other’s logos on one another’s websites, maybe it’s through a guest blog post or two that links out to your website or social media, or perhaps even a social media takeover. Making friends with other businesses and working together can benefit the both of you and increase your visibility.
Themed promos make amazing marketing tactics
Themed promotions that take place on specific days, or certain times of year can be very effective at getting people through your door. This is especially effective when it happens on a consistent and regular basis so the pattern of the promo gets stuck in your consumer’s mind. For example, you may host a ladies night, or have a different drink deal each night like Tequila Thursday.
Introduce a referral program
A new client can be worth a lot for you, and your current customers can be your biggest advocates. Think about developing a referral program that rewards engaged and active customers to encourage their friends and family to join in on the fun.
For example, a yoga studio may reward a current client with a free class or special discount when they refer a new friend to join. You may already have your social media platforms set up for your business and regularly are posting about what you have happening. However, by taking the time to actually seek out conversations happening around not just your business, but also your industry, can be incredibly beneficial.
- Join in on a Twitter chat as an expert
- Look for people who may like what you are doing
- Follow them
- Engage with them
For example, if you are a yoga studio, seek out people on Twitter that are into yoga and fitness in your area. Next, follow them and become part of their tribe. Everyone is good at shooting out content to people on social media. Very few people take the time to listen to the conversations happening and engage.

5 Ways to Keep Your Business from Becoming Stagnant
When you are a new business owner you have an energy and enthusiasm level that is hard for anyone else to match. You are excited about your new adventure and have tons of plans and projects you can’t wait to dive into.
But after the shiny wears off, what you are left with is lots of work and demands on your time. As a result, it’s easy to get caught up in the day to day responsibilities and not recognize when your business ceases to thrive and grow.
Fortunately, you can take measures to keep your business from becoming stagnant.
1. Set new goals
A good way to keep your business from becoming stagnant is to set new goals. If you created a goals list the year before, look it over and determine how many of them you met.
Are there some you need to carry over to your new goals list? If not, remove them along with those that have already been met.
Add your new goals to those that you are carrying over. This list should be reviewed at least once per month to ensure you are making progress.
2. Change your website
When you feel that your business is not growing you may need to make some updates to your website. Look it over to make sure everything is accurate and well written.

Sometimes one of the easiest ways to keep your business from becoming stagnant is to add new products or services. Doing this one simple thing can increase growth and profit margins.
If you aren’t sure what to add to your business to enhance it, why not ask your customers? They can be an invaluable resource to help you determine what more you could be doing in your business.
4. Survey your customers
When you need to know what your customers think about your business, create a survey and request that they send it back. To ensure they complete it, pair it with a sale in which you draw completed surveys for a prize.
Finding out what customers want assists you with providing it to them and taking your business to the next level.
5. Host an event
Rather than having the same old sales events every year, change things up. Host an event where you have a guest speaker who demonstrates a new product you carry.
Or, hold a one-of-a-kind sale to celebrate your business’ birthday, for example. There’s no limit to the ideas you can come up with to hold a special event.
If your business is primarily online, have a guest speaker create a video you can post on your website. Do some social media marketing ahead of time and you will likely get some increased web traffic.
