Interviewing on Upwork: What to Ask Potential Clients

On #TipTuesday, we asked the Upwork Facebook community: "What is the most important question to ask in an interview?"

Interviewing for a project online isn’t that different from interviewing in person. Although the proposal and communication occur virtually, many of the same principles apply.

For tips to help you through such a critical process, we asked the Upwork Facebook Community which questions they felt should be asked in an online interview.

While the majority of participants agreed that topics such as project timing/duration, payment terms, and prior experience are important, many pointed to questions that would provide more insight into a potential client/freelancer relationship. Here is a selection of the advice they offered.

“Freelancers should ask if the client will be involved during the development phase and available for timely feedback, updates, or needed discussions. Clients should ask for a brief process of how the project will be implemented to determine if the freelancer understands what’s needed.”

“’Can you please describe the job in your own words?’ I just want to make sure that we are on the same track.”
– Næzîsh Ìdręëš

“I have always asked about previous results the client may have received on similar projects. Ninety percent of the time this question opens up a conversation with the client. Also asking for details about the kind of results clients are looking for [when considered with] the project timeline is important, as some jobs can take more time than expected to get the results [they want]. For example, marketing and sales-specific projects [can be unpredictable].”
