The Internet of Things (IoT) is expected to include more than 50 billion interconnected devices by 2020, which creates countless opportunities for business sectors to reinvent what it means to be productive.

Joe McKendrick of RT Insights saged the following evaluation:

“The IoT world represents a convergence between data analytics, embedded device development, engineering, and traditional computer programming. Many disciplines will need to come into play for the ultimate success of IoT.”

Before we can reach that business realization, however, we will need sheer manpower in the IT and programming fields to make it happen—and that might be an issue. It is estimated that there will be a deficit of ten million tech professionals over the next four years.

CIO’s Sharon Florentine reviewed data from Upwork and estimated that to meet that demand, some fields will have to experience rapid growth, with some fields expanding by more than 200 percent.

How will the workforce fill these gaps in qualified tech talent? The answer will come from freelance marketplaces, such as Upwork, where tech professionals can service a wide array of clients as their needs expand. This includes developers, data analytics professionals, engineers and traditional programmers, and will likely expand to other professions as even more possibilities are realized.
