Here’s a look at the latest headlines:

CNBC: ‘New Collar Jobs’ for the Future

What jobs will we need to prepare for in the relatively near future? IBM CEO Ginni Rometty recently called on President-elect Donald Trump to focus job creation efforts on vocational skills, rather than four-year degree programs. Doing so would support what she called “new collar” jobs—“entirely new roles in areas such as cybersecurity, data science, artificial intelligence and cognitive business.”

In an interview with CNBC, two future of work experts agreed but think the conversation could go even further. Paul Hsiao, Canvas Ventures partner and former board member of Upwork, emphasizes coding as one skill that can open a lot of often unexpected opportunities.

Mike Liebhold, of the Institute of the Future, agrees but thinks Rometty doesn’t go far enough. “There’s a vast array of new skills that are required: Understanding general systems, cultural skills, new social and collaborative skills—especially creative skills,” he said. “All are going to be required as part of a continual education.”

He says learning how to educate ourselves, to be agile and flexible, is needed for people to stay competitive in the face of a competitive environment—particularly one that includes automation and artificial intelligence.

Skillsoft | Are You a Simplifier or Complexifier? The Truth in 10 Questions

In an environment of constant learning, are you as a leader making things more simple or more complex? Author Lisa Bodell, a global council member of the World Economic Forum, says simplicity needs to become a daily habit.

“Complexity sucks the energy from an organization and prevents it from collaborating, flourishing, or innovating,” she said.

She lists 10 questions you can ask yourself to do a self-assessment. “By humbly addressing your specific behaviors that are contributing to complexity, you can actually reduce your complexity level right now.”
