DATE OIL BENEFITS: The Hair-Saving Ingredient That’s Missing from Your Routine

More Companies Embracing Flexible Teams: Upwork Future Workforce Report [Infographic]

A group of workers gathered around a table

How are U.S. businesses tackling today’s hiring needs? A new report from Upwork finds more and more companies are turning to freelancers.

Future Workforce: How Companies Embrace Flexible Teams to Get Work Done,” is based on a survey conducted by independent research firm Inavero. According to the survey’s results, finding talent is getting harder, and many companies plan to engage more freelancers in the coming year—primarily to help scale or to find skills they don’t already have in-house.

“Businesses are scrambling to adapt and keep up with the rapid pace of change in our world… Traditional models of hiring no longer provide the agility businesses must have to access in-demand skills when and where they’re needed.” — Stephane Kasriel, Upwork CEO

The following infographic highlights some of the key findings.

Inside Upwork: Meet Amy Sept

Amy Sept, managing editor of the Upwork blog, pictured in Ottawa, Ontario.

Moving every few years is common for military families, which creates career challenges for spouses and family members who aren’t in the service. However, those unique circumstances can also be an opportunity to build something of your own that can move with you.

That’s what Amy Sept decided to do. A Canadian military spouse, she’s the managing editor of the Upwork blog and a contributing author to the Hiring Headquarters. She has been working with Upwork (then oDesk) since 2011.

Q: Describe your freelancing journey. What made you decide to take your professional life in this direction?

“I (slowly!) launched my own business, starting with small contracts in 2009. I’m a military spouse, so I never know when I might need to relocate. That makes it awkward to pursue a traditional career, and starting my own business seemed the best way to take control of my professional life.

“I was fortunate to have Upwork (then oDesk) as an early client—what a chance to learn about how work is changing from people in the Upwork community, who live it every single day! I have fantastic clients who’ve helped my business grow as I’ve taken it ‘on the road’ multiple times–even making a move halfway across the country.”

Amy Sept, pictured with a hungry wombat in Australia

Amy with a wombat in Australia.

Q: What does a typical day look like as a freelancer/remote employee?

“Most of the people I work with are in different time zones, so I typically start my day with email to make sure I haven’t missed anything important. The next step is to review projects and upcoming deadlines. Then I check and prioritize my to-do list; my day goes best when I can finish something high priority before lunch.

“I try to end my day with a fitness class or commitment of some sort to someone else—that gives my day a hard end time, and it’s good to go out and do something.”

Q: Describe some of the benefits and challenges of working remotely.

“The number one benefit [of working remotely] for me is flexibility of location, schedule, and the type of projects I work on. I appreciate that I can choose and control my work environment. It’s easy to feel isolated, though—especially when traveling or living in a new city. I’ve just joined my first coworking space!!

“And I’m a fan of video calls. Upwork’s distributed content team meets weekly, which is a great chance to catch up. I’m also in a virtual mastermind group that connects every week; they inspire me and help keep me on track.

“Focus is another challenge that takes regular effort and discipline. Routines and habits help me a lot. I have playlists that help me focus regardless of where I am. Sometimes I literally set a timer and commit to work for a set chunk of time. Other times, I accept that I need to go do something else.”

Q: What does “work without limits” mean to you?

“I’m the one who decides what work—and success—means to me. Everyone wants different things at different times in life. I think ‘work without limits’ gives each of us the opportunity to define what that balance looks like for ourselves.”

The Hairdresser’s Guide to Regaining Confidence

We’re Upgrading Upwork’s Systems on April 8: What You Need to Know

A concept image of data on the move.

Upwork has grown rapidly over the past few years and our infrastructure has grown with it. However, parts of these legacy systems have caused site outages and slowdowns. It’s time to do something to fix that.

On Saturday, Apr. 8, we are going to do a massive data migration that will improve site speed and stability. However, we can’t do that without taking Upwork’s site and services temporarily offline.

We know how disruptive extended downtime can be and are doing everything we can to make this process as brief and seamless as possible. Over the next week, we’ll notify all users via email about the update.

Here’s a look at what we have planned and how you might be affected.

Upgrades to support your business

Upwork has grown rapidly over the past few years; three million jobs posted every year, worth $1 billion USD. At the same time, we’ve rolled out new services to support your business, such as messaging and video conference/screensharing capabilities.

It takes a lot of resources to power the world’s largest freelancing website, and we’re quickly reaching capacity. That’s an issue that disrupts your ability to get work done.

Right now, our production environment is split between an aging data center and the Amazon Web Services (AWS) region in Northern California. These two environments are connected by a dedicated network link. That link was the source of a lot of instability until we upgraded it last year and built in redundancy—but it isn’t a good long-term solution.

The infrastructure in our legacy data center is aging—and it isn’t aging well. It’s been in production for several years, and as demand has gone up we’ve leaned hard on those systems. We replace failed hard drives in our database servers almost weekly. Many of the site outages and slowdowns we’ve run into are due to hardware failures in our database servers.

In contrast, AWS is a cloud service platform that’s built to be scalable, flexible, and reliable. By migrating our entire production environment to the AWS Northern California region, we’ll be able to serve more customers, expand our services, be more efficient with our resources, and cut back on downtime.

Unfortunately, we can’t make the move and keep Upwork’s database servers live at the same time. But this upgrade will bring us much closer to our goal: To be able to rebuild Upwork’s production environment from scratch, using automation, in any AWS region as needed. That resiliency can help us provide a faster and more stable site.

Working through the outage

On Apr. 8, we’ll start at 15:00 UTC, taking Upwork offline and moving through the migration process. We estimate this will take six to eight hours. We’ll share regular updates through our social media channels and Upwork’s status page.

During that time, you will not be able to access:

  • Upwork.com, including your account, payments, time tracking, and job search
  • The Upwork desktop app
  • Messages—whether through upwork.com, the mobile app, or the desktop app
  • The Upwork blog
  • The Hiring Headquarters
  • The Community forums
  • Help pages
  • Information via Upwork’s mobile apps

If you work during this time, ensure your client knows about the downtime and arrange to bill your time manually; it can be recorded on the Upwork site once maintenance has wrapped up.

We apologize for any inconvenience this upgrade might cause. Rest assured that our team will be working carefully to get the Upwork site back online as quickly as possible. On Apr. 8, you’ll be able to get the latest updates through our social media channels or Upwork’s status page.

If you have any questions in the interim, please add them to the comments below.

Be Spring and Summer-Ready with These Cruelty-Free Beauty Essentials

7 Ways to Make Your Workday More Efficient

A freelancer working on her computer, getting her workday organized so she can be as productive as possible.

Working more efficiently not only leads to better business success, it also makes for a more satisfying day. The Upwork Facebook community offers these tips on how to maximize your productivity at work so you can also make time for the things that encourage a happier, healthier you.

“I plan my next day’s work the afternoon or evening before, jockeying Asana tasks and calendar [events], so that I can exercise first thing and then start work immediately the following morning.”
— Jeri Birkes

“I make my to-do list before I go to bed, to make sure everything is organized as soon as I wake up. As a working/business mom I have multiple tasks daily. I work 12 hours a day while managing my business and family at home.”
— Myra Pascual Caballes

“I balance work, family, friends, and ‘me time’ so I don’t get fatigued. I schedule work from Monday to Friday only. I chose to work from home so I have a flexible schedule to do all these things that are important to me. A well-rested and happy person is more productive at work and chores. When working, I start with the most important task first and work toward the least important one and make sure I finish tasks on time.”
Bai Tender Sinsuat

“If something can be done within five minutes, do it immediately.”
— Vijayasarathy Muthu

“I saw this advice on an Upwork post recently: Sometimes you just have to start working… While this is something very simple, it’s also very important to keep in mind: No work will be done until I actually start working.”
Zoltan Koves

“Prioritise, then get each task done before starting the next one. Review priorities regularly.”

“The best tip I have is to break each task down into small chunks and determine how long each task should take you. Then I set a timer for the task and when the timer goes off, the work should be done and I move onto the next step or the next task.”

Upwork Newswire: How Can You Leverage The Augmented Workforce?

Looking up from an office lobby; groups of workers stand on different levels of the building.

This biweekly column features the latest freelancing trends and Upwork’s role within them.

Deloitte’s 2017 Global Human Capital Trends:
The future of work: The augmented workforce

Deloitte describes their recent Global Human Capital Trends report as a “call to action for HR and business leaders.” The way we work is changing, and while individuals might adapt quickly, Deloitte notes that organizations aren’t matching that pace.

The report identifies 10 trends for attention and action. One of them is the augmented workforce, a shift toward artificial intelligence, robotics, and the open talent economy.

“Almost every job is being reinvented…. As this trend gathers speed, organizations must reconsider how they design jobs, organize work, and plan for future growth.”

When it comes to rethinking work—looking at ways to “create new jobs, boost productivity, and allow workers to focus on the human aspects of work,” such as communication, personal service, and problem solving—most companies say they’re ready to make the shift. Seventy-seven percent say they’ll either retrain people to use tech to their advantage, or redesign jobs to suit the strength of human skills.

However, when it comes to human capital, such as the growing freelance economy, they’re far less prepared. According to Deloitte, while a majority of companies feel they’ll increasingly tap into different talent sources over the next few years:

“…only 49 percent say they are not able to manage contingent labor well and 55 percent say they have never used or do not understand how to leverage crowdsourcing.”

Embracing this reality of the modern world of work takes a shift in perspective. For example, Deloitte suggests considering a number of strategic questions, including:

  • What is the human “value add” around key skills that might otherwise be automated?
  • Where does work—or specific types of work—need to be done?
  • How can people be used to “save time and money, increase quality, and improve operational flexibility and scalability?”

Driven by the fast evolution of technology, Deloitte says that among all the trends they’ve identified, the future of work is likely to accelerate most rapidly over the next few years. That means defining the difference between “essential human skills” and “nonessential tasks”—then planning to leverage both.

By considering solutions like the contingent workforce, companies can be better prepared to keep pace with the new rules of work. Learn more by reading the full report from Deloitte, “The future of work: The augmented workforce” >>
