Increasing Protections on Upwork

A group of people gathered in a huddle.

Our aim is to make Upwork the safest, easiest way to do work online. Your security is enhanced when you communicate and pay or earn through Upwork, where you’re protected by our trust and safety programs.

Lately, we’ve focused on developing new ways to prevent scams on our marketplace, such as malware scanning and spam protections in Upwork Messages. We’ve also expanded our freelancer ID verification program to better safeguard against fraud.

As we look ahead, we’ll make it even harder for fraudsters to waste your time and cause harm to your businesses. In the next few months, we’ll be rolling out three initiatives to increase protections for clients and freelancers when working through Upwork:

  1. Connecting trusted clients with trusted freelancers: We’re updating our search rankings to highlight freelancers who regularly earn through Upwork. Freelancers who work and get paid through the platform will be rewarded for their loyalty with greater visibility. In addition, clients will be able to quickly find proven talent.
  2. Increasing protections during interviews: For some jobs, we’ll require interviews to take place through Upwork Messages (using our chat, voice, or video calls) to ensure both clients and freelancers are protected by our trust and safety systems.
  3. Reducing SPAM and increasing account security: We’ll continue to improve our own systems and take action more quickly on community-reported fraud. We’re also partnering with third-party vendors to improve malware scanning.

These initiatives are coming over the next few months and we look forward to seeing them improve your experience and success on the platform.

Every day, talented professionals like you are proving what’s possible in freelancing. Thank you for making Upwork the place where clients and freelancers can work without limits. Please continue to share your comments, concerns, and success stories on our community forums.
