Many industries in the U.S. are facing skill gaps and businesses are scrambling to find the talent they need, when they need it. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, for example, estimates that by 2020, there will be 1.4 million more software development jobs than developers who can fill them.

According to “Future Workforce: How Companies Embrace Flexible Teams to Get Work Done,” a recent study by Upwork, companies are increasingly turning to freelancers for timely access to the expertise they need.

Stephane Kasriel, CEO of Upwork, says four key trends are driving this shift: Persistent hiring difficulties, local talent shortages, technology empowering flexible work, and professionals who increasingly choose to be independent.

“Employees are smart hires to make when a generalist is needed long term, but when it really comes to getting work done that requires specific skills, freelancers are invaluable – especially when that work needs to happen fast.”

The result, he says, is a hiring strategy that leverages employees and freelancers, using the strengths of each to adapt and scale quickly.
